Dollar SymbolThe home based business industry is a multi-million dollar business in the United States. These revenue generating opportunities are great for down-sized ex-corporate employees, retirees and stay at home moms. In fact, the U.S. Census Bureau reports that more than 5.4 million moms have put their careers on hold in order to stay home with their children. These statistics contribute to the allure of the opportunity to generate revenue while maintaining a flexible time schedule. With persistence and the right business model, you too can successfully run a home based business.

What’s right for me?

QMAnd that leads us to the most important and sometimes perplexing question – of the thousands of different businesses…which home based business is right for you? A good overview of all the kinds of businesses you could start can be found by looking at how the federal government classifies businesses. All federal data are now collected using the North American Industrial Classification System (NAICS) of Businesses. This system identifies 1,170 industries each of which include a number of specific types of businesses. Judith Kautz at http://www.smallbusinessnotes.com/businesses.html has the list as well as informative tips about home based business and information about this system.

While I can’t tell you which business to start, my goal over the next few months is to review 100 of the most popular home based businesses, provide proven tips, trends, business reviews and interview successful business owner.

Whether you are a stay at home Mom, college student, or just looking to supplement your income, home based businesses are avenues to achieve personal and financial growth and success.

If you are a home based business owner or know of one that would like to share their experiences; successes, failures, wisdom and inspirational stories, please drop me a line with the contact information or just join the blog with a comment, trackback or pingback.

Challenging thought of the day: Are you talking about it…or living your dream?

Up Close and Personal – The Interview

There are lots of folks talking about home businesses and some are living the reality of generating income from their home based business like Tami Lane, a Consultant/Unit Manager. I caught up with her upon her return from a wonderful all expense paid vacation. Just one of the many perks she receives from Princess House. She obliged an interview and below is the script.

Q. How long have you been working with Princess House?

A. I will be celebrating my 15th year with Princess House this June, 2006.

Q. Describe your successes with Princes House?

A. There are so many successes with this business. It has afforded me the freedom and lifestyle of which I never thought possible. Unlimited income potential, with the option of choosing when I need more money or more time. I have traveled to exotic and wonderful places all expenses paid and been treated like royalty. However, there is the success of being able to own my own business while helping others with their dreams.

Q. Any obstacles along the way to your success?

A. Any home based business; especially those in Direct Sales will throw many obstacles in your way. What I always say is that when something goes wrong, you just re-evaluate the situation and try again. It is always a learning and improving situation. So smile and move on.

Q. What type of training is provided by the company?

A. Princess House offers Free Training. and the beauty is that when you need additional, it is always there for you. We start you off on a Training Class, and the observation of 2 shows. After that, there are monthly Workshops and Classes available to keep you informed. And best of all, when you are ready we do have Management training available to you.

Q. What advice would you give to someone considering the Princess House business opportunity? What attributes should they have?

A. Why not? You have absolutely nothing to lose. Your investment is just $25 and some time. If you feel that it isn’t something that you can do then you walk away with over $300 in cash, a kit valued at over $450 and some new friends along the way. Plus, did I mention the Free Products? Anyone can do this. You just need to believe in yourself and allow us to help you succeed.

Q. How has your business helped in your personal growth? Growth as a Businesswoman?

A. My personal growths also come in many! I have been able to run a successful home based business. Stay at home with my son, and take my husband on trips of a lifetime. All of this, because I decided to give it a try. The pride in knowing that what you do helps others, will in return full fill you in ways unimaginable.

Q. Are you a mentor? If so, what business and personal advice are you giving?

A. I like to consider myself a mentor and friend. It is my job to help others, and I love that. The only advice that I can give is that this business begins with your attitude and willingness to let it take you where you would like to go. So, just never give up, and give your honest effort, the rest will come easy.

Q. Any last words of inspiration for Entrepreneurs?

A. Remember that you have it in you to achieve anything that you would like to achieve. Never give up. Always smile and keep a positive attitude in everything that you do. You too can do this, I believe in you, now you need to believe in you.

Would you like to be a part of this growing phenomenon?

Could you use an extra $500 to $1000 per month working part time, or maybe you could use an all expenses paid vacation? I can help, ask me for more information about the Princess House Business Opportunity. Working Part-Time, YOU, can acheive your goals.

Mind Games – Ready to start your business? June 13, 2006

Mind Games – Ready to start your business?

–>

You’ve researched all 1,700 business categories and picked the business you think is right for you – You might be asking, NOW WHAT?

That is an excellent question. However, before moving forward, please heed a quote from my dear niece – “slow your roll”. A “reality check” of your motivation for starting a business is necessary. Your core motivation is key to business success. The right motivation will carry you through the tough times and allow total enjoyment during the high times. Studies indicate the wrong motivation for opening your business can be a death sentence march to failure. Why start on the road to failure?

If as a prospective entrepreneur your thinking the best reason to start a business is because:

"I'm broke and need to make some money…fast!"

or,

“This is a great opportunity…I’ll make at least $20,000 in two weeks”

or

"I want to start a home business, but I don't want to spend anything on it until after I start earning some money."

or

“This is a fantastic opportunity…it won’t take much time or effort to start raking in the big bucks”

…it is certain that you need a "reality check" and should not attempt to start a home business under any of those conditions.

I recently happened upon a great article by Ken Bannerman. Ken refers to these comments as the "death sentences" for starting a home based business.

I suggest that you grab a cup of coffee or tea and take a moment to read the article and reflect on your motivation for starting a home based business.

Teens – Start your own business June 21, 2006

Face with question mark

As a parent having spent time with teens that have an entrepreneurial spirit but no clue as to what kind of business to start, I’ve taken advantage of this opportunity to connect with my teens by offering suggestions and helpful hints on selecting and starting their business. Below is a list that with a little effort can make a very successful summer business.

I am sharing my favorite business opportunities based on first hand success stories and research.

A wonderful quote to ponder from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.

Summer Businesses for Teens:

A cleaning service. Maybe you hate doing your chores at home, but getting paid for doing them is completely different! You could offer complete housecleaning services, or specialize in one or more areas, such as attic/basement/garage cleanups.

A yard maintenance service. There is always something that needs to be done…mowing lawns and weed control in the spring and summer, raking leaves in the fall, and shoveling snow and planting for the spring in the winter.

A car-detailing business. With so many people working multiple jobs and having such busy lifestyles, very few people have the time to really take care of their cars — and you could offer a weekly or monthly service of washing, waxing, vacuuming, etc.

A pet sitting service. Typically people tend to go on vacation and need a pet sitting service. This also makes a great year-round business by offering pet walking, bathing, cleaning, etc. services.

A PC tutor/Web site development service. Are you a whiz with computers and the Web? Well, many adults are not, and you could make a good business helping people learn to use PCs and develop Web sites for their families — or for their businesses.

A catering service. Do you enjoy cooking and baking? In these busy times, if you can provide a service that offers well-cooked meals or cookies, you could do quite well.

A painting service. If you have some experience — or there is a few of your friends that want to go in business with you — you might consider a painting business. People are always renovating…and you could paint exteriors in the nicer months and interiors during the colder months.

An errand, messenger, or delivery service. This idea works best in larger cities where there are more people and public transportation, but these are busy times and people need help with all sorts of errands.

An educational tutoring service. If you have expertise in one or more areas — music, foreign language, math and science, or others — you could offer tutoring sessions to children, teens, and adults in your neighborhood.

An online Web business. If you are a master at creating Web pages, perhaps what you need to do is brainstorm a concept for an online business — where your potential customers can come from anywhere in the world, not just in your local neighborhood. If you are a whiz at setting up social networking pages like MySpace or blogs, why not offer that service to your friends and family.

A freelancing service. If you are truly gifted in a certain field, such as writing, drawing, or photography, consider starting a freelancing business where you sell your wares to various businesses and media outlets.

I encourage the Stratbiz readers to add to this list from their personal experiences.
